As a teenager, Dawn lived on the Navajo desert and had many Navajo and Hopi friends, some living in very remote and beautiful places. Sometimes they would take her to gather natural materials -- yucca leaves for baskets, clay for pottery -- and encouraged her to gather samples of the many colors of sand she found in the variegated formations of the desert. Back north in Wyoming, Arapaho friends taught her to use the sticky prickly pear pulp to stick the colored sands onto a hard surface. This is one of the sandpaintings she has made over the years using these natural materials. This one is the cover art on one of her canvas journals.

My work is driven by the land, animals, wild plants and birds I have come to know so well. Hummingbirds still try to get nectar from my upturned fingers. My artwork consists of all these things and more...
